A route with a shared story
The Glagolitic Alley, or Aleja glagoljaša, links Roč and Hum across roughly 7 km. Its eleven commemorative monuments honour Glagolitic writing and the cultural life built around it. The route rewards a different kind of attention from an ordinary scenic drive.
You do not need to recognise every letter to enjoy it. Begin with the shapes: a carved sign, a stone table, the scale of a monument against the land. Then use the official explanations to connect the objects to the people and ideas they commemorate.
A modern tribute to an older tradition
These are modern memorials to a much older written culture. The project began in 1977; the Buzet Tourist Board credits the concept to Zvane Črnja, with Josip Bratulić and sculptor Želimir Janeš developing the work. Distinguishing the age of the memorials from the age of the heritage makes the visit more interesting.
At the Hum end, the town gate becomes the final chapter. Take a moment to study its copper surface and the medallions depicting rural life. Arrival is not simply where the route stops; it is part of what the route is trying to say.
Choose your own pace
For a relaxed first visit, explore Roč, make selected stops along the road where it is safe and permitted, then continue to Hum. Avoid trying to turn every monument into a timed photo stop. A handful of carefully observed places can be more satisfying than a rushed complete circuit.
If you plan to walk or cycle, check the route, weather and road conditions beforehand. This is a cultural route along local roads, not a promise of a continuous traffic-free footpath. Carry water, stay visible and plan the return: the quoted length is one way.
Make the letters part of your visit
Look for the relationship between public monuments and the smaller inscriptions in the town itself. The contrast brings a large cultural subject down to a human scale. Families can compare a few letter shapes or sketch one rather than trying to memorise an alphabet.
A guide or a careful reading of the official route notes will add context. Avoid tracing carvings with objects or climbing on monuments for photographs. The best souvenir is a better understanding of why writing matters so much to this landscape.
